Safyre Terry before fire

This story was so touching that I couldn’t resist on sharing with you, my friends. So…

Meet Safyre Terry. An 8-year-old girl who survived a house fire and suffered burns over 75%. She lost her father (David) and her siblings (three adorable children – two brothers and a sister all under the age of three) in the fatal May 2013. What happened? SOMEONE (unknown) set fire to the upstairs stairwell that led to Safyre Terry’s apartment.

She is alive only because of her father’s heroic act – he held her in his arms, protecting the young girl from breathing in the hot air.

Now, Safyre, lives with her aunt Liz Dolder after her mother signed over custodial rights to the state of New York.

After this awful family loss, many surgeries to graft skin over her burns, losing her left foot and right hand, the little girl has only one wish this holiday season: She wants to fill her Christmas card holder with as many cards as possible.

It’s easy  if we all send a simple Christmas card that will fulfil her heart.

“Safyre lost everything – her father, her mother, her sister, her brothers, her home, her favorite toy, her favorite outfit – everything that was familiar to her,” says Dolder, who petitioned the courts to become her guardian. “She even lost the one thing we all take for granted – her reflection. But she wakes every morning with a smile on her face. She is the true definition of hope, faith and love.”

Liz, who lives with her husband and 5 children in Rotterdam, New York, often posts updates on Safyre’s health to a Facebook page she created called Safyre Schenectady’s Super Survivor. New about this campaign can be found in Facebook page CardsForTerry

Over 20,000 people have shared the post, and Safyre’s sweet wish is coming true. So far, she’s received 14 cards from Florida to New Hampshire, to California.

“She’s even had a few emailed from Italy, Sweden, Russia and the United Kingdom,” says Liz. “When she opens these cards, the twinkle in her eye and the sparkle in her smile are priceless.”

Cards can be mailed to:

The family also created a YouCaring fundraising page to help with her medical expenses, and since her Christmas wish went viral this week, more than $174,000 has been donated.

Safyre – a Wish Come True

In a touching video posted to the Facebook page on Wednesday, Safyre, surrounded by received cards, thanked everyone who sent her one.

One card costs almost no efforts. But for the little Safyre means a lot. Means support. Means hope that good exists.  Means that she’s not a victim, but  a hero. There’s still time until Christmas to make Safyre even happier.

I’ve sent my Christmas greeting card to Safyre. How about you?
